Though quite steeped in science education, special science students are not necessarily as adequately trained in scientific writing, particularly the proper documentation of their research/thesis. This may be due to the lack of teachers who are specifically trained to teach scientific writing or who are quite experienced in actual scientific writing. While special science teachers may have the needed competence to teach specific fields of science, scientific writing, by itself, is a distinct field that can only be properly taught by trained scientific writers or research professionals and practitioners who have had distinctive experience in scientific writing.
The OYSI and their partner institutions can help special science students enhance their research/thesis writing capabilities by reaching out to special science school teachers and giving them the opportunity to learn from the experts. Such learning experience can go a long way in enhancing their capabilities in teaching research/thesis writing to special science students.
The project involves the holding of a one-to-two-day seminar-workshop in identified geographical areas by NAST and the OYSI where scientific writing experts will engage and mentor special science school teachers on research/thesis writing so as to help strengthen the scientific mindsets of special science students through enhanced scientific writing.
