Cesar G. Demayo
Field of award: Genetics/Entomology
Year awarded: 1999
Division: Biological Sciences
In recognition of his contributions in the genetics and ecology of rice insect pests which have had a significant impact in molding trends in research in these areas. His studies have pointed out the limitations of empirical techniques in germplasm evaluation and have indicated the need to improve these procedures. His investigations on rice insect pests have shown that changes in genetic structure and interactions between genetic factors and the environment affect population size. A clear understanding of these relationships will lead to the development of more effective programs for insect pest control and plant improvement.
