In recognition of his significant contributions in the fields of genetics especially in plant genetic resources and genetics of disease resistance. He has identified wild species that easily transfer genes to rice that are useful in rice improvements. His successful cloning of the coat protein gene which can be engineered in rice to build pathogen-derived resistance- a highly potent weapon against tungro virus – is considered a major breakthrough.
