Grecebio Jonathan D. Alejandro
Field of award: Biology (Botany)
Year awarded: 2006
Division: Biological Sciences
In recognition of his pioneering work on the phylogeny in the genus Mussaenda Burn. Ex L. and its allied genera in the family Rubianceae using molecular techniques. His contributions, healing the first revisions in the systematics of Philippine Rubiaceae beyond the enumeration by Merrill in 1923, established a new genus, Bremeria including 19 new combinations for Mussaendeae, and five new species and a variety of Philipppine Mussaenda, and proposed new circumscription of Mussaenda sensu stricto. This information is invaluable in selecting species with possible medicinal value, for indentifying species with ornamental potential and for describing species most meaningful for phylogenetic studies.
Dr. Alejandro’s descriptions are coded in the DELTA (Descriptive Language for Taxonomy) database for interactive and information retrieval. His results have been presented before international and national scientific organizations in various conventions, symposia, and congresses and have been published in internationally and nationally recognized journals on botanical systematics.
