In recognition of his outstanding research works in the field of molecular microbiology and immunology specifically in the study of the Philippine isolates of medically-important protozoan parasites. His most important accomplishment is his pioneering work on the development of molecular and immunological tools to accurately differentiate the morphologically indistinguishable Entamoeba species, the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica and the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar. He is the first scientist to document the genetic diversity of various isolates of intestinal protozoans, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia and Blastocystis bominis in the Philippines.
